Albany, a city in Alameda County, is situated on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, just north of Berkeley. The city was first settled in 1853 and incorporated in 1908.At the time of its incorporation, the residents chose the name "Ocean View," but as names of this type were becoming too common, a vote was taken in 1909 and the name "Albany" was selected, in honor of the birthplace of the city's first mayor, Frank Roberts.Golden Gate Fields, one of the largest thoroughbred racetracks in the country, draws racing fans from throughout the Bay Area.Residents of Albany can get hospital care from several East Bay hospitals, such as Alta Bates Hospital in adjoining Berkeley. The students of Albany Unified School District produce test scores that are consistently among the best inthe state.
